We’ve spent the last week recovering back to the Guard position and our Lesson Plans this week cover two Open Guard variations – the Butterfly and X-Guard. Utilizing both of these in conjunction with each other can result in some very strong attack options for the bottom player.
On Monday and Tuesday our focus will be the Butterfly Guard and the Hook Sweep. Depending on how our opponent reacts, we have several options to modify our technique and claim top position.

The X-Guard is an excellent way to use similar “hooks” to deal with a standing opponent. Our legs are able to keep them off balance for several Sweep opportunities and even a chance to take the Back!
